In Path of Exile 2, the wrong input method can turn a promising build into a tiring one long before damage becomes the real concern. Controller and mouse-and-keyboard setups change how precisely you place skills, how comfortably you move during attacks, and how quickly you handle inventory tasks. Before the November 6 version 1.0 reveal, it is worth testing both rather than spending on Path of Exile 2 Currency or planning a new character around assumptions; a short comparison can show which skills actually fit your hands.

Test the skills that define your build

Use the same character, area, and general skill group for both sessions. The goal is not to compare damage, since input choice does not settle that question. Watch for placement errors, movement interruptions, and moments when you hesitate because the control scheme feels slow or unclear. Ground-target abilities often benefit from mouse control because the cursor makes placement more direct. Directional attacks and skills used while moving may feel more natural on a controller, where movement and ability input share the same physical space.

These patterns are useful starting points, not universal rules. A skill that feels easy to aim with a mouse may still be awkward if your available desk space is tight. A controller may make movement comfortable while making several simultaneous actions harder to reach. After each session, write down the specific problems rather than a vague rating. Separate aim, movement, button access, and interface work so one weak area does not distort your judgment.

During the comparison, pay particular attention to these situations.

Test ground-target skills against stationary and moving targets.
Check whether directional abilities follow your intended facing during movement.
Open and close the inventory between encounters instead of judging combat alone.
Notice whether repeated actions cause hand strain or accidental inputs.

The result should identify the skills that remain comfortable under pressure. If your planned build depends on precise placement but the mouse feels cramped, that is a practical equipment issue rather than proof that the skill is unsuitable. If a controller makes combat smooth but inventory sorting frustrating, decide whether that interface cost is acceptable for longer sessions.

Remove setup problems before judging either device

Input settings can create symptoms that look like poor game design. Check sensitivity, cursor behavior, aim assistance, and accessibility options before drawing conclusions. A drifting analogue stick can cause unwanted movement, while a crowded desk can make mouse control feel inaccurate. Clear notification overlays, charge the controller, and keep enough mouse space for broad movement. These small checks protect the comparison from problems unrelated to the game.

Save a screenshot of your current bindings before experimenting. Then change only one part of the layout at a time. This makes it easier to identify whether a radial menu, remapped button, or altered sensitivity genuinely helps. Do not switch devices halfway through a single test session, because familiarity and fatigue can be mistaken for a hardware advantage.

What to watch during the version 1.0 presentation

Controller players should look for interface improvements, radial menu behavior, remapping flexibility, and any changes that reduce the number of awkward button combinations. A skill that feels inconvenient in the early-access build may become easier after a better layout. Mouse users should watch inventory handling, weapon changes, and other quick interface actions. A presentation built around rapid clicking may reveal where a controller adds extra friction, but it does not establish that one setup is better for every activity.

There is no need to purchase new equipment solely for reveal night. Use the device you already understand, record your current layout, and compare the full information afterward. Hardware becomes worth reconsidering only when a repeated limitation affects the skills or routine you actually intend to use.

Choose the input method before planning a league start

Once the reveal is finished, filter your character ideas through control comfort before focusing on damage themes or Ascendancy plans. Keep a short list of skills that already feel reliable, then test one newly highlighted option within a day while its control requirements are still clear. Practise a basic stash cleanup as well, since routine organisation can feel very different between devices. If a controller gives you better movement but slows trading, or a mouse improves placement while causing fatigue, weigh that daily cost before browsing poe 2 trade; the better choice is the one that preserves your preferred combat rhythm without making ordinary tasks irritating.
